What to do with perfume you don't like

A perfume you tried and didn't love, a barely used bottle or a sealed gift: your options to return, layer, give, swap or dispose of it safely.

Short answer

If it's sealed, return it if you can, give it away or swap it for a fragrance you'll wear. If you opened it, try it differently first (on clothes, layered, in a different season); if you still don't like it and the bottle is mostly full, you can give it to someone who likes it or, in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, swap it in SwapMyBeauty's Second Love Club (original clear bottle, at least 70% left). Don't pour perfume down the drain: it's flammable.

Questions

Can you return perfume after opening it?

It depends on the store. Some accept opened fragrance within their return window, many don't. Check the receipt or the store's website before you buy.

Can you sell or swap used perfume?

Some marketplaces allow partially used perfume. On SwapMyBeauty, opened perfume can be swapped only in the Second Love Club, in its original clear bottle with at least 70% left, and every listing is checked before it goes live.

Is it safe to use a perfume someone else opened?

Perfume is sprayed without touching the liquid, but a used product's storage can't be verified. Check the ingredients, do a patch test, and stop if you have a reaction.

How do you dispose of perfume?

Use it up or give it away if you can. Otherwise follow your local household hazardous waste rules, because alcohol-based perfume is flammable, and recycle the empty glass bottle.
