Swap smart

What you can and can’t swap

Cosmetics go on skin and some travel as hazardous materials, so the rules are short and strict. They are part of our Terms of Service.

✓ Swap it

New, unused, factory-sealed, authentic makeup, skincare, hair care (shampoo, conditioner, masks, oils, styling creams), bath and body care (bar soap, body wash, hand wash, lotion, scrubs, bath soaks) and gift sets, bought from the brand or an authorized store or received as a gift. Labels, ingredient lists, batch codes and expiry dates intact, with at least 3 months left before expiry when a date is printed (products without a printed date, showing only an open-jar symbol and batch code, are fine).

⚠ Restricted: cosmetics with SPF

In the US, anything with an SPF is regulated as an over-the-counter drug, so these follow stricter rules.

  • Only face and lip products with an SPF: creams and moisturizers, serums, foundation, BB and CC creams, primers, concealers and lip balms.
  • Factory-sealed, with the “Drug Facts” panel visible in your photos.
  • A printed expiry date with at least 6 months left.
  • Kept away from heat: never left in a car, in the sun or near a heater.
  • Not allowed: sunscreens for body, beach, sport or kids, and any SPF spray or mist.

⚠ Restricted: fragrance

  • Sealed, boxed perfume, cologne or body mist up to 250 ml (8.4 fl oz) per bottle.
  • A factory-sealed gift set with fragrance counts as fragrance: tick “This set contains fragrance” when you list it.
  • One fragrance per parcel, by ground only, within the lower 48 states (not Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or military addresses), after our shipping review.
  • Apply the Limited Quantity mark we give you, don’t cover it, and hand the parcel over at a staffed carrier counter.
  • Never tuck perfume into another parcel.

✕ Not allowed

  • Opened, swatched, used, decanted or refilled products
  • Expired products, or products with removed or scratched-off batch codes
  • Fakes, replicas and “dupes”
  • Testers, decants, “not for individual sale” or “not for resale” items
  • Recalled products
  • Prescription products
  • Sunscreens (body, beach, sport, kids) and any SPF spray or mist
  • Acne treatments (benzoyl peroxide, adapalene), antiperspirants, anti-dandruff and other over-the-counter drug products
  • Aerosols and anything under pressure
  • Nail polish, nail polish remover and acetone
  • Hair dye, bleach, developer and relaxers
  • Beauty devices or anything with a battery
  • Products banned in your state or the recipient’s state
  • Foreign-market versions without US labeling

When it arrives

Check the seal before confirming receipt. Patch-test new products on a small area of skin first. If anything looks wrong, you had a reaction, or you suspect a fake, report it from the swap page before confirming receipt. See our Safety page and Terms of Service.
